Hurricane Michael hits the Florida panhandle

Just a few days ago, Michael was predicted to be a relatively weak storm. Nothing to ignore, but certainly nothing historic. It seemed that Hurricane Michael strengthened out of nowhere! Before we knew it, they were predicting a category 3 hurricane to hit the panhandle and ordering mandatory evacuations in Panama City Beach. When Michael eventually made landfall to our east, it measured at a category 4 with devastating 155 mph winds.

Both of our condos were occupied, of course, since it was fall break for so many schools and the beach was perfect! With our guests evacuated, all we could do was watch and wait. It took until this afternoon to find out the condition of our two condos at Splash. Our wonderful realtor, John Skinner, Sr of the At the Beach realty team, drove out to check on the property and take pictures for us.

As you probably know by now, Hurricane Michael pummeled Panama City and Mexico Beach, which are to the east of us. The east side of the hurricane is always the most dangerous. In Panama City Beach, and particularly on the west end where Splash is located, the storm was much weaker. The arrows on the map below show where the storm was strongest.

We are very grateful that our PanBeach Condos were spared! We have sustained ZERO damage! There’s some cleanup to be done at Splash, but nothing major.

The beach remains as beautiful as ever, although the water is not the crystal green/blue we’re used to seeing. Hurricane Michael stirred up the water and the waves were huge!

We still have power at Splash, but all of Bay County doesn’t have water service. Two water pumps at the dam are damaged and need to be repaired. Once the water service returns, we should be up and ready for visitors again. We hope to have you come and stay soon! Click here to book your next vacation.

Please continue to support and pray for everyone in Panama City and in Mexico Beach. Many people have lost everything and will need lots of help to rebuild. This interactive map shows satellite imagery after Hurricane Michael.

Things to do in Panama City Beach – Beach Safety

We’ve all seen the flags on the beach, but do you know what they mean? Knowing how to interpret the flags will keep you and your family safe, so please take a minute to learn about beach safety.

Double Red- Danger! Water Closed to Public
Single Red-High Hazard, High Surf and/or Strong Currents
Yellow-Medium Hazard, Moderate Surf and/or Currents
Green-Low Hazard, Calm Conditions, Exercise Caution
Purple-Dangerous Marine Life (Usually Jellyfish)
*Absence of Beach Flags Does Not Assure Safe Waters*

If you see Double Red flags, DO NOT get in the water! It’s very dangerous, and you’ll usually see police patrolling the beach telling people to stay out of the water. Good news: we hardly ever see Double Red flags. Usually only if a hurricane is coming through, like last year during Irma & Maria.

Enjoy the beach and remember that safety is important! If the gulf isn’t safe today, just go in one of the awesome pools at Splash!

How to save money on your next vacation!

Today, February 7, 2018, is the first #BookDirect Guest Education Day! Homeowners are coming together to let you know a dirty little secret: those online travel agencies and booking sites are charging you extra fees! I’m going to show you how to save money on your next vacation.

You might see something on your price quote called “service fee”. Guess what? It goes directly to the listing site – not the owner of the property you’re booking! These fees can be from 5-15%, sometimes even more. They’re double-dipping; they collect fees from the owners to list the properties, and they collect fees from you to rent the properties. It can be avoided!

So how do you avoid paying unnecessary fees? Book direct with the owner!

Look but don’t book
Search those big listing sites to find properties you like. Now google the name of the property, or the owner’s name, or both. Many of us have created our own websites so you can book direct (like this one

Try searching Facebook for the owner’s name, property name, or the area you’re interested in. Most owners have a facebook page for their property.

Fee-free sites
Try one of the new fee-free rental sites. We are listed on and but there are lots more, too.

Just say NO to unearned service fees!

Where to Eat in Panama City Beach – Sharky’s Beachfront Restaurant

sharkys panama city beach

Fresh gulf seafood and a beachfront view make Sharky’s a must-visit when you’re in Panama City Beach. Sharky’s was founded almost 30 years ago by Clark “the Shark” Bennett. It’s a PCB institution. There’s live music almost every night during the summer, as well as a playground for the kiddos! Open for lunch, dinner and drinks daily.

I recommend getting fresh seafood, because you’re on the gulf, after all. But if you’re not a seafood lover, they have lots of other options. Try the World Famous Shark Attack cocktail if you’re not driving! Kids meals are served on a take-home frisbee, which is fun.
